final paper idea December 1, 2008
My idea for the final paper would be to discuss how the internet has shaped our lives so much to the point that people do not have to leave their homes to function. For instance, familydoctor.com is a website where people can type in their symptoms and diagnose themselves. There are pros and cons to this, also how ichat and emails have made it so that businesses can go global and this is why there has been so much spreading and sharing of cultures, and the spread of globalization. there is another world on the internet and it has drastically changed society for the better and for the worse.
Google tracks the flu this year November 13, 2008
While reading The New York Times i came across an article on how Google is using the searches that people are using to find symptoms on the flue to track where it has hit. With people asking google about the flu researchers have been able to group it into a region and will be able to know what region the flu will attack up to 10 days in advance. It is a more reliable and faster than the center for disease control because it is one search engine the cdc has to go through multiple search engines and other resources to track the flu and where it would hit next. This new tracking from Google could initially save lives, and help warn hospitals and health care centers when the flu will be hitting their area.

This is a collage of global warming. Is it real? If it is then what can we do to save our planet? The Polar Bear represents the endangered species and the polar ice caps melting. The refinery represents pollution and how we only have one earth so that we have to take care of it. The Lady Liberty is wearing a lifesaver because it shows how the ice caps are melting and how the earth will be covered in water.

This picture was taken outside of Oliver hall (Saga) I liked the way the columns looked because they were going horizontally and the sunlight shining through was going vertically, the beams on the top of the walkway had an interesting pattern and the lineup of all the different kinds of lines create an interesting image. It almost looks never ending like the hallway could go on forever. There is also a contrast between the white columns and the dark beams and the dark floor. The line of the straight lanterns also add to the symmetry in the picture.
The new blackberry touch screen October 9, 2008
It seems like the blackberry is going touch screen. The new phone is called the Storm and is going to cost around $200 with a two year plan. The first company that will have the phone available will be Verizon. The new iphone 3G is going to have major competition. There is no longer a track ball on this new phone but many of the same symbols and the main screen button are still there. The phone buzzes and seems to indent whenever you touch the screen. It has a landscape mode at any time the user wants to not like the iphone where it can only be used on landscape in certain applications.

welcome to facebook September 30, 2008
The internet connects millions of people all over the world. It is a way that we have to communicate that is was not necessarily around or as popular as it is now. This generation may be referred to as one of the “dumbest” but we are the most well connected generations because of this amazing technology.
One of the websites connecting millions is the website called facebook. It is a website that is free to join and will connect you with people you know allowing you to share pictures, videos, and blogs. The website is geared to attract young adults and teenagers. Its motto is “Facebook helps you connect and share with the people in your life. The main picture on the startup page is a world with the outline of people on every continent connected by dotted lines.
I think that this website is not gendered but unisex, it is not masculine or feminine, it an in between, the setup is very simple with clean boxes, and clear writing, using very simple language. It is definitely geared towards a younger age group, but it is sophisticated enough that it attracts young adults.

The effect that the media is having on our world is that we are more connected then we have ever been before. Because of this more cultures are sharing their views, their languages and even their businesses. One example is the spread of “Americanization”, countries all over the wold have become more “westernized.” One great american symbol is the golden arches of McDonalds. According to about.com there are around 30,000 McDonalds worldwide in over 119 countries. Those statistics show how much of an influence technology and America in general have on the world.
